About the Board of Assessment Appeals

The Board of Assessment Appeals is among the oldest local government agencies in CT dating back to the Colonial period

The Board of Assessment Appeals is an official municipal agency. It is designed as an appeal body for the taxpayer who believes that the town assessors erred in the valuation of their Real Estate Property, their Personal Property Assessment, or their Automobile Assessment.

The Board sits in March for the real estate and personal property appeals and again in September for automobile appeals.

The Board sits as a review body at each hearing and along with the taxpayer, reviews the assessor’s cards for any math errors and to see if there is a notation of something that is not in or on the property. We then review other like property to see if the final assessment is in balance.

Accomplishments of the Board of Assessment Appeals

In 2008 we had 160 appeals.
In 2009 we had 60 appeals.
